It had been some time since I drew a portrait in person. While studying, my friend let me draw him which I thought would provide a good and steady pose. But I forgot how much one actually moves around when reading and taking notes. Ha! Never the less it was a fun drawing.
I used an imprint from the previous drawing as a base here. Since I have felt pretty restrained by my head as of late I'm leaning toward more brusque strokes. Inspired by constellations I drew with my eyes closed, voyages I dream of taking, and colors I yearn for this Spring. Happy Friday!
After watching Lulu Miller's Creative Morning's talk I decided to take on some of her tips. You can say this is my brain yodeling to the paper and I'm glad it happened. When I started the drawing I was too attached to the original photograph I had found. Now you can see traces of this initial drawing but it's more like a trail a mouse would leave in the snow.
I had an impromptu drawing session today, drawing on my friend, Kirsten's journal cover. It's a portrait of her dog, Bailey. Turns out he dislocated a disc so it's especially meaningful today. Wishing a quick recovery for this cute pup!
I started this a few weeks ago and was hesitant about where to go with it. Realizing this was weighing me down I decided to splash and swirl some marks. It's not my favorite but from this drawing I did find new shapes to use in the future.
After researching a bit more on the Tarahumara people yesterday I felt a sense of relief and let go. I started this drawing without thought or fear. It is and onward I go.
I wasn't going to post as I'm not the happiest with this, but then I remembered the reason I started this project. This is what I drew and it's ok. On to the next day!
A friend gave me a field guide book to the birds of California not too long ago, and I've been discovering so much in the book. Here's my more colorful re-interpretation of the American White Pelican.
Trying out a self portrait with patterns for the first time. One element led to another without any preconceived idea. Looking forward to pushing this further.
I started off by thinking of an MTA illustration by artist Marcos Chin. I've seen it on the train a bunch of times and I really enjoy it. You can check it out here. His use of lines to define all of the characters' contours is lovely and I wanted to play with that idea. But then I started listening to Radiolab and a story on the fight to conserve a bird called theKirtland’s warbler and at some point I evidently thought of "The Red Balloon." There's also some 80's rock hairdo going on here. I went with it all.
I've been reading Haruki Murakami's new book, "Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage" and this style of drawing came to mind. The feet maybe came to be because I've been running a lot- not sure. This was a fun drawing to get things going again.
This day felt a bit quirky. So I searched for images of sea otters and thought, "If I was a sea otter, I would float and feast on sea urchins all day." There are days like this that call for randomness in order to get through the order.
It's been moving to see more and more people both in Mexico and Mexicans in other parts of the world protest what's been going on in Mexico for the past many years. I've been learning more and more about Ayotzinapa and feel sad and ashamed at the country's actions. All of this has also put into perspective my own family's reasons for moving to the states and what life could have been like for my sister and I should we have stayed. My hope is that we will finally come through with a more transparent government.
