A Drawing A Day, Day 77 - 11.15.14

Day 77

November 15, 2014 in adrawingaday, creature like, drawing, figurative, sea life, watercolor, sea otter, self portrait

This day felt a bit quirky. So I searched for images of sea otters and thought, "If I was a sea otter, I would float and feast on sea urchins all day." There are days like this that call for randomness in order to get through the order.

A Drawing A Day, Day 76 - 11.14.14

Day 76

November 14, 2014 in ayotzinapa, adrawingaday, drawing, ink, pattern, pencil, protest

It's been moving to see more and more people both in Mexico and Mexicans in other parts of the world protest what's been going on in Mexico for the past many years. I've been learning more and more about Ayotzinapa and feel sad and ashamed at the country's actions. All of this has also put into perspective my own family's reasons for moving to the states and what life could have been like for my sister and I should we have stayed. My hope is that we will finally come through with a more transparent government.

Day 73

November 11, 2014 in adrawingaday, color pencil, drawing, ink, pencil, bones

From thinking of the new Morbid Anatomy Museum in Brooklyn, I remembered visiting the Bone Church in Kutná Hora when I was in college. I was happy to find some pictures I took from that visit. It's amazing to see the ornate nature we create with ideas of death.

This is a frame from a dream I had. Although strange imagery, when decoding dreams it all makes sense.

Day 71

November 09, 2014 in adrawingaday, drawing, emotion from afar, figurative, ink, sign language, portrait

I'm still thinking of the Ebola victims, their families and the physical nurturing that they have been deprived of now. Read an interesting article on NPR about this very same topic. I wonder how others, or what others would do if they couldn't hold their loved ones.

Day 67

November 05, 2014 in abstract, adrawingaday, color pencil, creature like, drawing, gouache, ink

A few things impeded me from keeping up with the drawings for a while. However, instead of seizing completely I've decided to extend the date and simply finish 365 drawings. So all in all I'm back on track as it were. This is an abstract piece I played with using gouache and ink.

Day 65

October 23, 2014 in adrawingaday, drawing, emotion from afar, figurative, gouache, ink, portrait, ebola

It's hard to get away from all of the images of Ebola patients. It's especially sad when you see the kids that have been hit by the disease. This is a composite drawing of a couple of those images.

A Drawing A Day, Day 59 - 10.17.14

Day 59

October 17, 2014 in adrawingaday, drawing, figurative, ink, sign language, emotion from afar

I was reading about how Louise Troh (girlfriend of Thomas Eric Duncan, first person to die of Ebola in the U.S. a few weeks ago) heard of Duncan's death from her pastor, who had to stand a few feet away and could only console her through crossing his arms over his chest. It's so sad to see how this disease robs us of the consolation of human touch. But it's also remarkable what we do in place of it with just as much affection. You can read more about this and the life in quarantine people are living in here.
This made me look into sign language, how this can connect and what other emotions look like when we're left to display them from afar.
