A Drawing A Day, Day 35 - 9.23.14

Day 35

September 23, 2014 in abstract, adrawingaday, color pencil, creature like, drawing, pencil, pattern

I started the drawing upside down but a quarter of the way through it felt right to turn it upside down. Can't believe how long it has been since I worked on a patterned piece like this. I felt so much nostalgia for my days in college studying with Barbara Rossi and Karl Wirsum. They were part of the Chicago Imagists group and are just amazing people and artists.

Day 34

September 22, 2014 in adrawingaday, color pencil, drawing, ink, pencil, sea life, anglerfish

This is a super quick sketch of an anglerfish. It's terrifying (from my perspective) the way they mate here, but fascinating all the same. Definitely will revisit this and take more time on a watercolor. :)

Day 33

September 21, 2014 in adrawingaday, drawing, gouache, sea life, watercolor, glass squid, squid

While browsing deep sea creatures, I came across the glass squid. It's a beautiful creature that is mostly transparent with a few spots of color used as camouflage. Some of them strike me as human skulls that have morphed into sea creatures. So amazing to see how life is so varied.

Day 32

September 20, 2014 in adrawingaday, color pencil, creature like, drawing, ink, sea life, cat, donkey

The smallest drawing of them all. Everything is starting to get mixed up in my head but I'm happy to see it all come together.

Day 31

September 19, 2014 in adrawingaday, color pencil, drawing, ink, pencil, sea life, cuttlefish

Giving the cuttlefish another go with more time. But the watercolor will also come to be. These fish look so different from every which angle and light. Loving them. :)

Day 30

September 18, 2014

Today was a busy day! Had just a few minutes to create this cuttlefish ant thanks to a suggestion. :) Looking forward to creating a watercolor of this idea later and giving it its due attention.

Day 29

September 17, 2014 in adrawingaday, color pencil, creature like, drawing, ink, pencil, portrait, pig

Thought up some great ideas for drawings today! But for now I kept this to the point more or less. :)  Loving piglets right now.

I've finally started drawing my cat, Ely but in disguise.  He's very chic and spy-like of course.

Day 26

September 14, 2014 in adrawingaday, color pencil, creature like, drawing, figurative, ink, pencil, portrait, skeleton, skull

Started to think up new characters. This is a first attempt. Essentially, noticing my interest in skeletons and combining different animals, I thought to bring them all together. This one is paired off human to human, but you get the point. :)

Day 25

September 13, 2014 in adrawingaday, drawing, figurative, ink, pencil, elephant

Today I remembered someone telling me about elephants walking to their graves. I then checked out images of the young and of the old elephants. It seems they're truly one of our emotional comrades. Here is a an article with some interesting facts.

This headline definitely got my attention today- "A Dozen Puffins Will Get You 800 Mackerel: Inside The Weird Economy Of Zoos." Or maybe the puffins will get those 800 mackerel...

Day 18

September 06, 2014 in abstract, adrawingaday, creature like, drawing, figurative, gouache, heart, ink, sea life, watercolor, walrus

Continuing from yesterdays thought of, "if hearts had teeth," came a walrus-like creature. Naturally. :) I swear I was aiming to create a heart with teeth, but one thing led to another.
